Week 11 Update

Wow! What a busy week we had at Eagle. Thank you to everyone who helped make this an exciting time for all of us. We really enjoyed sharing pour classroom with so many of you on Tuesday for American Education Week. We hope you enjoyed doing some reading, writing, social studies and math with us.  Thank you for supporting our book fair as well. It was a huge success! Our turkey trot on Friday was a wonderful way to end things and we loved running and cheering for our friends.

Please remember to have your child read at least 5 times each week and record it on their reading log.  Our next reading log is due on Friday December 6^th.  Since we have vacation, 5 reading entries is fine, but if you can do more that would be great!

Please remember to send in hats and gloves each day since our playground can get windy! As winter approaches, please also make sure to label all of your child’s belongings. Our lost and found always grows quickly!!!

Our class is still collecting donations of food, etc for local families in need. We have students also collecting change for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

Week 10 update

We had a very busy 4 day week last week. We played a few new math games:

Race for a dollar, Pumpkin Doubles and Catching Bugs Doubles Plus One. We made observations of our seedlings for our seed unit and read more books about seeds and how they grow.  In writing workshop, we worked on stretching out our story across our fingers as a pre-writing strategy. We also made holiday cards to send to servicemen and women who will be away from their families during the holidays.

This week will be an exciting one at Eagle! We will celebrate American Education week and are looking forward to having our parents visit on Tuesday from 11 – 12pm.  The book fair will be at Eagle from Tuesday – Friday this week. On Friday we will have our school wide Turkey Trot at the High School track at 2:15. Parents are invited to watch! It will be a very busy, fun week for all! Week 9 Update

Week 9 Update

Dear Parents,

We planted some seeds this past week and are experimenting with some seeds that have no soil to grow in and some that have no light. Ask your child about where our seeds are located in the classroom. We started some work reading non-fiction books about spiders. In writing, we told our stories in “itsy bitsy” parts like the itsy bitsy spider song. We worked on retell based on Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin and Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant.   We went to the computer lab and started using a fact fluency program called Xtra math. We will be using it a few times in school and then I will be sending home information so the students can work on it at home as well.

HOMEWORK: Thank you for helping your child read each night and fill out their calendar. I have copied the calendars back to back to save paper. Unfortunately, I forgot to send them home with the kids on Friday, so they will be coming home tomorrow. Feel free to attach a slip of paper with reading info rather than rewriting book titles. Thanks!

PROJECT:  I hope you and your families are enjoying working on the Family Unit project. Your child brought home information about this last Wednesday.  The project is due next Tuesday, November 19^th.  Feel free to send it in early if you are done. J We can’t wait to share them!

PARENT VISITS:  We will be celebrating American Education Week on Tuesday November 19^th from 11 – 12 in our classroom with a variety of lessons and activities to give you a sample of what first grade is all about! We hope you can join us.

DECEMBER CELEBRATION: We would like to invite you to decorate gingerbread houses with us on Wednesday December 18^th from 2:15 – 3:15 pm. This is a change from our originally planned celebration. There is a conflict with the Eagle December Assembly on the 22^nd. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope that you will be able to join us.

week 8 update

What a great week!  We had a fun time with our pumpkin camp and talking about Fire Safety. On Wednesday the Delmar Fire Department came to Eagle and we got to learn about fire safety. Please check your smoke alarms and replace the batteries. We also discussed how each family should have a designated meeting place in front of their house in case of a fire. The firefighters explained that this will help them make sure that everyone has gotten out of the house safely.  The ladder truck was here and we got to watch a very brave firefighter climb the ladder. We also met a rescue dog. He was very excited to see the kids! Thank you to the firefighters for their visit and to Mrs. Spain for arranging this for our school. 

Thank you to everyone who helped provide treats for out Halloween celebration. They were delicious.  It was great having so many of you join us for the celebration as well.  I hope you had a fun Halloween!
